“Through the viewfinder”

“Through the viewfinder”

“Any client that has worked with me has probably seen me make this face… Thats me reaching way back in my brain trying to capture a vision. I don’t shoot until I see something in my head, a scene, an idea, an angle, a pose. Then I crunch some numbers in my head, tap dance my fingers onto the camera and start shooting.

I should’ve known a long time ago that photography was in my future. I used to have reoccurring dreams about getting a camera for Christmas or my birthday, but never thought to ask for one… The first time I discovered my dad’s film SLR from the closet at the age of 16, something happened. I fell in love with the click of a shutter. It wasn’t until after dropping out of college twice, living in Thailand, and working a real 9 to 5 at a camera store, that I realized for the first time that I could make a living doing what I love to do.

There’s something organic about the way a camera fits in the hand, something about all the meticulous little parts working together, something about the way the lens clicks onto the camera body that is so satisfying. Every time I look through the eyepiece I start dreaming about what it’d be like to stay in that moment forever. Looking back at some of photos taken while traveling, I feel like I can stay in that moment forever. I can stop time and bring it home to dream about again. That’s my favorite part of my job, sharing my dreams with other people hoping to spark their imagination and encourage them to chase their dreams.”

This video started off as an idea in the spring of 2012.  I was planning a trip to Europe to take pictures and videos with my girlfriend, Audrey.  I wanted to do something unique that helped capture what photography means to me, so the first thing I did was write a song.  The song I wrote is entitled “Through the viewfinder” and I ended up being inspired by it to script what you see above.  When I traveled through Europe I kept that script in mind, checking off the shot list as we went.
